An interesting visit last week to Tilley Ladder, an old factory that used to make wooden ladders, which has been converted to apartments, in Watervliet, NY. The building is certified LEED Platinum and has geothermal heat pumps, heat recovery ventilation, heat pump clothes dryers, LED lighting, and more. It is a BEAUTIFUL building – a historic building, with original stunning wooden floors, original structural posts, original brick walls, original steps, and the interesting history of the building on display with some of the wooden ladders they used to make in unusual places, like hung on the walls in the corridors. We will be evaluating the energy usage in coming months, but they report that their own estimates show a 50% reduction in carbon emissions. As we visited an empty apartment, the sun struck the windows through the blinds, and cast a beautiful light in the apartment. In these shorter days, we need all the light we can get.
